Gregor von Rezzori (1908-1996) was a noted Austrian playwright and novelist, best known for his social realist, psychological dramas. He was born in Vienna where he attended the University of Vienna, earning a medical degree. In 1930, he published his first novel "The Emperor of Austria", which became a major success and was awarded the Neustadt Prize. His next novels were "The Marriage" (1932) and ""The Sins of Marie Antoinette"" (1936)
In 1939, he returned to Vienna where he worked as a physician until the end of World War II. In 1946, Rezzori returned to writing full-time. In 1950 he married actress Maria Schell and moved to Italy where they lived for many years.
Rezzori's plays were performed throughout Europe and in the United States. His work is notable for its forthright portrayal of political themes, psychological realism and sensitivity to everyday social problems. Rezzori died in 1996 at the age of 87 in Rome, Italy.
